Job Summary

The Team
The Strengthening Abilities and Journeys of Empowerment (SAJE) program was created to support youth and youth and young adults in and from care aged 14 to 27 with new and enhanced services and benefits. The name was chosen by the Ministry's Youth Advisory Council, and reflects a positive approach that celebrates the journey from youth to adulthood. The program includes the introduction of funding to better support youth and young adults as they transition from care.

The Role
The Navigator supports youth, young adults, and their families to plan for the transition to adulthood and to coordinate with a broad range of government systems and services. Navigators work with cross-government partners to implement an integrated, collaborative approach to planning. As a member of a ten-person team, the Navigator plays a key role in creating a strong foundation for youth to successfully transition to adulthood.

Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's Degree or higher in Social Work or Bachelor's Degree or higher in Child and Youth Care; or, a related degree in an identified human services field (Psychology, Sociology, Criminology, Anthropology, Early Childhood Education, Theology, Indigenous Studies, Education, or Nursing).
    • NOTE: If your degree is obtained outside of Canada, have you had it assessed for equivalency to work in British Columbia through the International Credential Evaluation Service ( I CES ). Proof needs to be provided on or by the closing date of the competition for your application to be considered.
  • Minimum combined 3 years' relevant post-degree experience in both of the following areas:
    • Working in the community with youth or young adults with intellectual disabilities, Autism Spectrum Disorder or Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder, and their families; AND
    • Working with vulnerable youth and young adults with complex needs (i.e., substance use, mental illness, homelessness, or youth in care or formerly from care).
  • Experience applying person centred, goal-based planning.
  • Experience coordinating interdisciplinary/cross sector teams, providing informal leadership and community engagement.

Preference may be given to candidates with:
  • Experience engaging with Indigenous communities.
  • Applicants who self-identify as Indigenous, Métis, or Inuit with the required combination of education and experience.
  • Demonstrated experience in the use of virtual technology (MS Teams, Skype, Zoom, etc.) to deliver services and sustain meaningful engagement with youth, young adults, and families.
  • More than combined 5 years' relevant experience in both of the following areas:
    • Working in the community with youth or young adults with intellectual disabilities, Autism Spectrum Disorder or Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder, and their families; AND
    • Working with vulnerable youth and young adults with complex needs (i.e., substance use, mental illness, homelessness, or youth in care or formerly from care).

Willingness Statements:
  • Must have a valid Class 5 BC Driver's License with no restrictions.
  • May be required to use your own vehicle, with appropriate insurance, on an expense account basis.
  • May be required to work irregular hours, including some evenings and weekends, to accommodate the needs of youth and families.
  • Travel (as necessary, based on location) will be required; transportation arrangements must meet the operational requirements of the Ministry.
  • May be required to travel in adverse (reasonable) weather conditions.
  • May be required to travel in remote locations.
  • Willingness to work with families facing challenges which may occasionally involve exposure to situations involving individuals in crisis or requiring specialized supports.
  • Willing to provide services to youth and families in accordance with a virtual practice model (i.e.-over the phone and via video-based technology, if required).

About this Position:
There are currently 3 positions available:
  • 1 permanent position in Vancouver
  • 1 permanent position in Kelowna
  • 1 12 month temporary opportunity in Vancouver. This temporary opportunity may be extended or become permanent

Flexible work options are available; this position may be able to work up to 3 days at home per week subject to an approved telework agreement.
An eligibility list may be established to fill future temporary and permanent vacancies in Vancouver and Kelowna.
